Recently Read: Morganville Vampires, Hollowland, The Witch Sea

I went through another one of my health flare ups where I spend a great deal of time laying in bed, and got a lot of reading done! Which is good, because I’ve been writing so much lately that I hadn’t read all that much. You can see all that I’ve been reading on my goodreads, where I have a read-in-2012 shelf, but here I’ll highlight some of the most recently read.

The Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine. I’ve gotten through book eight in the series, Kiss of Death. I read one of these books a day, and they made a perfect companion while I was stuck in bed. They were fast and fun – full of action! Morganville, Texas is a town full of vampires, and young Claire is a nerdy girl who gets thrown into the center of it all. I have a soft spot for Claire – she’s a 16 year old who is starting college and really into physics. For a young adult urban fantasy series, I’ve enjoyed how much science gets put into the books. It’s not a lot, but it’s also not all that common to discuss string theory in a novel. I’ve gotten pretty frustrated with the teen girls waiting around while the boys take on the action, but as Claire adapts to her world and the series progresses that gets better, which makes sense. Like I said in the beginning, this is a fast and fun read! I’ve read eight, but there are actually twelve out there right now, and it’s still going.

Hollowland by Amanda Hocking. This was definitely a great book! Amanda Hocking has gotten a lot of press lately about her success with self publishing, but this was the first novel I’ve read of hers, and I can see why she has had a lot of success. This was another fun book that was full of action AND had a girl kicking a bunch of zombie ass. I haven’t read many zombie novels, but it made me want to read more. I would definitely compare this to Zombieland, because it has a group of people traveling around a United States covered in Zombies. The zombies in this book are fairly well developed, gross but interesting, and I fell in love with the characters. It was fun, action packed, and I was constantly laughing out loud and gasping in fear for the characters in the book while I read. I definitely recommend it!

The Witch Sea by Sarah Diemer
. This is completely different from the things I read above. This is a short story, but it’s longer than you’d probably expect. It feels complete, the writing is beautiful, and it left me feeling wistful all day. It’s a fantasy story about a witch with a family destiny, that’s really more of a curse. Everything I have to say about what it’s about is really irrelevant though – what is important is that it’s beautiful and I recommend it! I downloaded it for free on amazon for my kindle.Hollowland by Amanda Hocking. This was definitely a great book!
