Recently Read: Breaking Twig, Everyone Gets Scared, Looking for Alaska
By Faith | January 16, 2012
When I decided to look at what I’ve read over the past month I was surprised to see how long the list actually got. I’ve never been great at keeping track of time or how much I read. This year I’ve resolved to keep track of everything I read in 2012! I’ve got a 2012 shelf on goodreads set up so hopefully I’ll be keeping track of things. Anyhow, some of the greatness I’ve read lately includes…

Breaking Twig. This is my first official book of 2012. It’s a story about growing up in the worst circumstances. It’s not the books events that have really stayed with me, though there’s always something happening, it’s the characters that made me really appreciate the book. They’re real, they’re interesting, they grow, and when the book was over I wanted to reach in and give them a hug for all we’ve been through together.
I think this book is only available in ebook formats, but if you’re good with that I recommend it.
Everyone Gets Scared Sometimes. I love reading short stories. Daily Science Fiction has a ton of great flash fiction that you can read if you think you just don’t have time to read. Some are better than others, and this is one that really stood out for me lately. Zombie apocalypse, post traumatic stress…. brilliant.
Looking For Alaska. I know that everyone is reading The Fault in Our Stars right now, but this is my first John Green experience. I’d seen a lot of people in love with this book, and now I know why. This book was laugh out loud funny. It’s one of those great gems that made me both laugh and cry, and another book with real characters I just wanted to hug. I feel like everyone should read this book.
Obviously, I need to read more John Green, and will really be doing this soon. Promise.
So, what have you read lately?

YES you absolutely must read more John Green. I recently got my copy of The Fault in our Stars but I haven’t started it yet. It will be my first book I read in 2012 that was published in 2012!
At the moment, I’m reading A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness (it’s got a lot of Printz buzz around it) and I just finished How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr. Both books are suuuuuper sad and emotional, so I think I’m going to read another book before tackling TFioS — something light and fluffy… if you have any recommendations I’d be much obliged!
Also, you’re on Shelfari? We should be pals! Look me up, I’m liketotally.melissa [at] gmail [dot] com.

Oh! I have A Monster calls on my to read list, it looks really good!
I can’t think of anything light and fluffy right now, haha. Lately I’ve read a lot of pretty heavy books, I’m seeing now, except I’m reading through The Guild comics. Light and happy! I don’t know if you’ve seen The Guild (webseries) but the graphic novel is a prequel, and there are one shots out for all the characters.
I’m actually not on shelfari and have never really looked at it since I spend so much time on goodreads. I might look at that, though, and if I do I’ll add you!

I haven’t read much this year. I started working full time so I never feel like I have time to read. Whenever I do read, I usually read either mystery or horror though.

Oh! The middle link on here is to a short zombie apocalypse story. Short, so it doesn’t need much time, and you said you read horror. I think you’d like it

Ooh, Breaking Twig looks really good. I’m going to have to download that onto my Kobo.
I’m so glad you liked Looking for Alaska! That was also my first John Green book, and to date is still my favourite. The Fault in Our Stars is really beautiful too and touches on some of the same issues.

Yeah, I’m hearing nothing but amazing things about TFiOS! Looking for Alaska was so great.
Oh, I hope you like Breaking Twig, then! When I went to explain what all happens in the story to people I felt very awkward because there are lots of dark events. That happens a lot when I go to explain a story, though.

I’m still working on A Storm of Swords by GRRM. It’s depressing so I have to take breaks from it now and then. All of these books sound interesting, I’ll need to add the to my list!

I’ve got Game of Thrones on my list, I love the HBO series. They’re just so long, and I’ve already got a couple long series that I’m working my way through, so Im trying to take care of those first.
